Health Insurance Marketplace (ACA / Marketplace)
What is the Health Insurance Marketplace (ACA / Marketplace)?
It is a system where individuals and families can apply for medical coverage, compare plans, and determine whether they may qualify for financial assistance. ACA, Marketplace, and Obamacare commonly refer to this coverage.
Who may apply for Marketplace coverage?
Generally, you must live in the United States, be a U.S. citizen or national or be lawfully present, and not be incarcerated. Final eligibility depends on the application. A person with Medicare cannot enroll in a Marketplace medical plan.
When can I enroll or change plans?
You may do so during Open Enrollment. Outside that period, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period because of certain life changes.
What events may qualify me for a Special Enrollment Period?
Examples include losing other health coverage, moving to a new area, marriage, birth or adoption, and certain household changes. Each situation has specific requirements and deadlines.
Could I receive financial assistance?
Some individuals and families qualify for premium tax credits or other savings based on estimated household income, household composition, and available coverage. The application determines eligibility and the applicable amount.
Are preexisting conditions covered?
Marketplace plans cannot deny coverage, charge more, or deny essential health benefits because of a preexisting condition.
What do Marketplace plans cover?
All include essential-benefit categories such as outpatient care, emergencies, hospitalization, maternity, prescriptions, mental health, laboratories, preventive services, and pediatric care. Services, networks, costs, and additional benefits vary.
What should I compare before choosing a plan?
Review the monthly premium, deductible, copayments, coinsurance, annual out-of-pocket maximum, provider network, covered prescriptions, and plan-specific benefits.
What information do I need for an application?
Applications generally require household information, address, immigration status when applicable, current coverage, and estimated income. Supporting documents may be requested.
What should I do if my income or household changes?
Update the application promptly. Changes can affect the plan or financial assistance and may cause differences when filing a federal tax return.
